What is the process for cleaning upholstery?
Our first step in professionally cleaning your upholstery is to remove the cushions. There are several different ways to clean upholstery. The material and amount of soiling or spots, determines how we clean it.
Continued Upholstery Care
- Be sure to vacuum your upholstered furniture often possible. Keep in mind that dust settles on upholstery just as like it does on a hard surfaces like wood floors or shelving units. Your upholstery needs the same love.
- Avoid leaving magazines and newspapers spread out on your upholstery. Ink will accumulate on the surface and is difficult to remove.
- Always keep furniture out of direct sunlight by positioning it elsewhere. This will keep your colors from fading.
- Dyes can rub off so be sure not to cover your upholstery with dark-colored blankets or sheets. They rub off and bleed if they get wet.
- If you use furniture often, be sure to beat the cushions from time to time and then vacuum and rotate them. This helps by distributing the wear and tear. But don’t remove the cushion covers for cleaning even if they have zippers.
- These days furniture manufacturers attach tags with cleaning codes noted. The “W” means it is wet-cleanable, “S” means solvent-clean, “W/S” means either wet or solvent clean and finally “X” means dry vacuum only. Cleaning agents should never be used if marked “X”.
- Generally, upholstery should be cleaned every 1-2 years depending on heavy use, exposure and soiling.
Fabric Protection
Applying Scotchgard fabric protection can increase the life expectancy of your upholstery. However, it does not eliminate the requirement for proper upholstery care. Dust and dirt should still be vacuumed up on a regular basis and spills and stains should be cleaned as quickly as possible.
